Archeomedsites is a project within the European ENPI CBCMED Program – Program for the basin of the Mediterranean 2007-2013 aimed at the enhancement of historical sites (many of which are already inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO) in Tunisia and Lebanon, as well as the transferring and sharing of good management practices of the UNESCO sites.

Overall objective: create a Mediterranean network of institutions for the protection of archaeological sites, in order to standardize best practices and expand knowledge, promote exchanges, and involve other European countries, in application of the Barcelona Convention for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea.

Specific objective: develop and increase governance processes for the conservation, the safeguard and the enhancement of archeological sites, through the drafting of Management Plans and guidelines aimed at their maintenance and safeguard, as well as promoting any valorisation actions in order to create a shared management framework.

Fundamental core of the project is to share good international practices and governance processes of the sites, by developing guidelines for the preparation of management plans of the historical contexts in Lebanon and Tunisia, according to the model of the sites of the World Heritage List, with a particular attention to practices for prevention, protection, restoration, maintenance and enhancement of both the urban environment and the buffer zones that surround the site.

Activities:

Sharing good practices, preparation of reports on the state of the sites, cross-border analysis to outline the shared strategic plan, implementation and participation in thematic international workshops for the sharing of plans, organisation and participation in workshops and training courses on the subject of Heritage management, as exchange activities between the countries involved in the project.
